Opened in 1864, the Gare du Nord is the busiest railway station in Europe and the Paris terminus of the Eurostar to London, Brussels and Amsterdam. Behind the monumental façade designed by Jacques Ignace Hittorff — crowned by twenty-three statues personifying the cities and countries it serves, with Paris at the summit — a vast iron-and-glass train shed shelters the platforms. It is a major hub for high-speed TGV, RER and suburban lines, facing the elegant Gare de l'Est a few streets away.
